Statement – Kurdistan Human Rights Development (KHRD)Sheikh Maqsoud – October 6, 2025

Kurdistan Human Rights Development (KHRD) strongly condemns the recent actions of Ahmad al-Sharra, who announced national day celebrations while deliberately excluding the Kurdish cultural holiday of Nawroz. This discriminatory act has intensified tensions between Sharra-affiliated militias, Islamic groups, and Kurdish SDF forces in Sheikh Maqsoud, threatening social peace and cultural coexistence. KHRD affirms that this is not the first nor the last violation committed by Ahmad al-Sharra against Syria’s ethnic and religious minorities, reflecting a repeated pattern of marginalization and cultural suppression. We call on the United Nations Human Rights Council and the international community to investigate these ongoing violations, hold accountable those responsible, and ensure the protection of cultural and human rights for all communities across Syria.
